A Letter From Our Founder

Coffee is universal—found in nearly every country in the world, with roughly two billion cups consumed each day. Yet it’s also deeply personal. Depending on how it’s dried, roasted, brewed, and served, each cup can be entirely different. While coffee didn’t become a household staple until the 20th century, its roots stretch back thousands of years, carrying stories, rituals, and connections across generations.

I grew up in a house where coffee was brewed every morning. The aroma of a fresh pot filled the air as my parents got ready for the day. The smell was invigorating, but the drink itself held a certain mystique—something tied to routine and ritual, consumed the same way, at the same time, every morning. Still, I didn’t truly understand the importance of a cup of coffee until after college, when I started dating my wife.

We often began—or ended—our nights at a local coffee shop. She’d order a sweet concoction crafted by the barista, while I stuck to the darkest roast, black. No matter the flavor, one thing was always true: there were only two paper cups of coffee between us. Those cups left space for conversation, people-watching, and the kind of quiet, intimate moments that slowly built our relationship from the ground up.

Growing up, many evenings were spent around my grandfather’s dinner table. He served meals big enough to feed a small army, yet prepared with such care that each plate felt like it was made just for you. There was always a pot of coffee ready—one button away. When dinner began to wind down, he’d ask someone to “go push the button.” Soon, the scent of fresh coffee would fill the kitchen and cups would make their way around the table. It was his way of extending the night. Time was precious, and after-dinner coffee was his way of holding onto it—maximizing moments with his greatest treasure: family. Those conversations were filled with laughter, tears, and the kind of warmth you carry with you forever.

I think conversation is what ultimately drew me to coffee more than anything else. I’m a teacher by trade, and some of my closest friendships were built over early-morning cups of coffee before the chaos of the day began. Ski mornings always start the same way—coffee before sunrise, sitting by the fireplace, planning the day’s runs. We’d map out trails, laugh about the previous day’s wipeouts, and joke through the aches and pains. Camping mornings followed a similar rhythm: a percolator over the fire or a moka pot on a jet stove, steam rising as we planned hikes and replayed the sights and stories from the day before.

In all of these moments, coffee fueled more than our bodies—it fueled connection. It sparked romance, strengthened friendships, and deepened family bonds. These are the moments I’ll always cherish, and they’re the moments that gave birth to Sol Grind Coffee.

Sol Grind exists for the early starts, the long days, and the stories shared in between. It’s for chasing the light, embracing the grind, and gathering with friends—whether that’s around a campfire, in a ski lodge, at a kitchen table, or out watching the sun rise somewhere new. Our hope is that every cup you brew becomes part of a conversation worth having, an adventure worth remembering, and a moment worth slowing down for.

As the holidays arrive and the days grow shorter, we’re reminded how meaningful these small, shared moments truly are. We’re incredibly grateful to be welcomed into your homes, your cabins, your campsites, and your quiet early mornings. Knowing that Sol Grind has become part of your daily ritual — the cup you reach for before the sun rises, the one poured for a friend, or the one that keeps a conversation going just a little longer — means more to us than we can express.

Coffee has always been about more than what’s in the mug. It’s about slowing down, connecting, and being present with the people who matter most. This season, we thank you for choosing Sol Grind, for sharing it with those around you, and for letting us play a small role in the moments that make your days memorable.

From our table to yours, happy holidays. May your cups be full, your conversations meaningful, and your adventures just getting started.
